ACE - Adult Community Education
ACE was founded in 1990 to provide community based education and training in the borough of Wigan and Leigh for people with learning disabilities. It is a voluntary organisation with charitable status which does not make a profit from any of its activities.
In 1991 the organisation became a company limited by guarantee and was managed by a Voluntary Management Group comprising of the four founding members and volunteers from a wide range of professional backgrounds.
Since 1994 the Wigan town centre site has been funded by Wigan Social Services to provide a person centred service for over 50 people. In 2000 funding was secured from the Community Fund to provide a similar educational facility in Leigh. The Leigh service has been operational since April 2000 and provides an educational service for 50-55 learners on the Life Skills programme.
The organisation gained Charitable status in 2002 and has been successful in meeting the national standard for the Investors in People Award. As an education provider ACE is committed to delivering quality educatonal programmes and managing the performance of its service and employees.
The organisation works in partnership with local employers and other service providers within the voluntary and community sector. These include training agencies and the local council. This ensures that information is disseminated and good working practices are shared. ACE also works closely with family members and support agencies to identify individual needs for the benefit of the learner.
